Classic Rock Bands

The adage classic rock bands create classic rock songs was never more true for me one night in 1966 or 67 when I was at Bill Graham's Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco.  Billed as the Allmon Joys, this bunch of scruffy, long-haired Southerners ambled out on to the stage and when the band was ready, Gregg leaned into his microphone and said; "Hello.  We're the Allman Brothers."

Immediately following that brief introduction, a new song was added to my list of classic rock songs when they kicked into Statesboro Blues.  It was as if the entire audience was on strings controlled by some master puppeteer above as those screaming slide riffs of Duane Allman brought everyone to their feet in a massive YEAH.  Statesboro Blues became a giant of classic rock songs in my mind at that moment and whenever I hear it, I still get chills.  And when I play it at home,  even my neighbors can enjoy it.
